Our approach to performance improvement

Dr Michael Hammer, the leading thinker, defines the opportunities for performance improvements as “the fundamental rethinking and radical redesign of an entire business system to achieve dramatic improvements in critical measures of performance”.  He defines a 'business system' as including business processes, organisational structures, management and measurement systems, together with values and beliefs as well as job definitions.  He visualises these dimensions as shown below in the form of a ‘business system diamond’, which helps to define the boundaries for all performance improvement and transformation methodologies - each designed with the goal of improving business performance.

At OTT Consulting we do not take the 'one size fits all' approach to improving the performance of business today favoured by many providers of 'business process redesign' or 're-engineering' services.  Like Dr Hammer, OTT Consulting considers that to achieve and sustain the sort of business improvements sought requires a full analysis of all dimensions of the change diamond.  OTT Consulting's approach to improving business performance is consistent with the essentials of successful transformation management, providing a response to all five essential change challenges (prerequisites for success), namely:

  • the leadership challenge

  • the performance challenge

  • the capability challenge

  • the culture challenge

  • the delivery challenge.

OTT Consulting's approach reflects the overall structure of managing large-scale change, and uses a three-phase approach:

  • Phase 1: Defining the objectives and focus
This first phase of re-engineering represents an intense eight-week period of analysis to develop and build commitment amongst management to a process development solution focused on those areas providing the greatest rewards for the organisation.

  • Phase 2: Developing the Solution
Phase 2 is concerned with mobilising the team and developing the solution to the point where implementation is fully planned.  With 100% release of resource for the team a solution can now be developed, depending on the boundaries of the workstream chosen.

  • Phase 3: Achieving the Benefit
Phase 3 is concerned with practical implementation to achieve the expected benefits.  Supporting all activities with professional change management disciplines is necessary to ensure success.  A clear change management plan will have been established at an early stage and is vital.

In summary, our approach to improving business performance is always to address our client’s need and to design ‘change programmes and projects’ so that the right things happen for the right reasons.  Our style is to work in partnership with the client, using our expertise in consulting, training, facilitation and coaching skills to make sure that skills development and transfer actually happens.  This approach ensures that our client team members develop through the experience and are left with a positive legacy.  OTT Consulting draws on the knowledge, capability and expertise of all our team players, whether full time employees or associates.  It is the collective strength of our team which helps our clients transform their business to achieve significant increases in value, profitability and effectiveness through organisational development.
