Our approach to capability development

 

At OTT Consulting we recognise the vital contribution that people can make to fully realising your organisations vision, goals and objectives.  All business strategies, and the results they are intended to achieve, can only be achieved by people.  It is people’s collective and individual capability, and their motivation which determine the success or failure of any business strategy.   Our goal is to work with you to address your business-led priorities; to enhance both the infrastructure capacity of your organisation and the individual and collective 'capability' of your people'.  We will help you to determine the critical organisational, occupational and individual 'capabilities' required to achieve your business ambitions and highlight the gaps between desirable organisational, occupational and individual 'capabilities' and reality.  We achieve our goal through the selective application of our core consulting services designed to fully address the range of Capability Development challenges.

 

Our starting point is often the development and implementation of a business-led ‘people' or HR strategy that meets the needs of our client’s business now and in the future.  Our work then often involves the re-design and re-development of the existing organisation in order to meet the requirements of the HR strategy.  Our experience informs us that organisation design and re-design must be consistent across a number of variables depending on whether it wants to be command and control or highly flexible.  For example, policies for goal setting, measurement and performance review, and the systems and processes used, must be designed with flexibility in mind if the organisation – collectively and individually – is to be responsive.

 

In practice this means that we need to focus on five interrelated strategic challenges or change-themes which inform the HR strategy:

  • The Leadership Challenge  - to create the vision, values and direction for success

  • The Performance Challenge - to focus all parts of the organisation on what adds most value

  • The Competence Challenge - to bridge the skills gap between vision and implementation

  • The Culture Challenge - to change attitudes conditioning responses to leadership/change

  • The Delivery Challenge - to make change happen faster, and more reliably. 

In summary, our approach to Capability Development is always to address our client’s need and to design ‘behavioural change programmes’ so that the right things happen for the right reasons.  Our style is to work in partnership with the client, using our capability development expertise, consulting, training, facilitation and coaching skills to make sure that skills development and transfer actually happens.  This approach ensures that our client team members develop through the experience and are left with a positive legacy.  OTT Consulting draws on the knowledge, capability and expertise of all our team players, whether full time employees or associates.  It is the collective strength of our team which helps our clients transform their business to achieve significant increases in value, profitability and effectiveness through Capability Development.
