Our commitment to our own development requires us to continually learn.  This means we know and appreciate that learning is difficult.  It involves unlearning the old and comfortable methods - often established intuitively.  OTT Consulting employs an approach which takes individuals and groups through a cycle of learning, known as Kolb's Learning Cycle, which is Active and Passive, Concrete and Abstract, and is continuous - on all training and development programmes everyone is learning all of the time in this four-stage sequence. 

 

However, individuals have preferences for the 'modes of learning assimilation' that work for them.  We recognise this and design all our learning programmes to encourage learning by: engaging learners by offering a 'concrete experience', which is followed by observation and reflection, this leads to the formation of concepts, ideas, principles, attitudes, which will affect ones own behaviour as together we try the new ideas in new situations.  In everyday life, this sequence is often 'informal' and can go on at a subconscious level; on our training and development programmes we attempt to make it more conscious, controlled and explicit.  For learning to be effective, all four stages need to occur, and this applies equally to learning skills or knowledge-based subjects.

Our underlying philosophy is that all training and development courses must be based on business requirements e.g. objectives.  Thus, the whole of the analysis, design, development and implementation process stems from an understanding of business needs, and how training can help move your organisation from where you are, to where you want to be.  The emphasis on analysis reinforces this.  Active involvement of both OTT Consulting team members and target group staff at all stages is built in to the process and is crucial to its effectiveness.  In line with this philosophy, the need for flexibility is recognised.  The nature of training, plus the need to adapt to the target group needs, requires that the methodology allows for flexibility in the face of differing situations.  Therefore, the intent is for this methodology to be a set of guidelines or act as a reference source highlighting best practice actions rather than a prescriptive statement.
