Developing a 'winning' business strategy

The pressure for achieving competitive advantage has never been stronger in business than today… but achieving this without the damaging effects of disruptive change is today’s most difficult business challenge.  Many organisations never fully realise the potential of their investments in processes, technology, systems, brands etc.  Why?  Because they have not been successful in creating a compelling business unit strategy.  Developing the strategy for a business is the starting point for any future ‘change decisions’; a strategy will also give a framework within which the planning for, and control of, change programmes can be placed in context.  Our approach to strategy development focuses on the definition and implementation of business strategies at both a corporate and a business unit level.  OTT Consulting's approach to the development of either a corporate or a business unit level strategy is based on the following ‘sacred stones’:

  • Strategy is issue led

  • Strategy is fact based

  • Strategy requires internal and external consistency

  • Strategy is long term

  • Strategy is what happens

Our approach is to identify quickly the small number of key issues which significantly influence the strategy development process, and focus the analysis on these issues .  We ensure the necessary facts are obtained and analysed appropriately; the data collection and analysis is supported by a variety of tools and techniques; that the strategic analysis places appropriate emphasis on both internal and external factors; and that the analysis focuses only on those factors which will impact on the ability of the enterprise to succeed in the long term .  In summary OTT Consulting's focus is on change, since in our view strategy is what happens, not what is planned to happen.  We believe the involvement and commitment of the CEO and his team throughout the strategy development process is critical to enable successful implementation, and as such we would see the key process elements for each of the identified four phases as shown below:

  • Phase 1:  Definition of scope, outputs and workplan

  • Phase 2:  Strategic analysis

  • Phase 3:  Scenarios and strategic options

  • Phase 4:  Formulating and implementing the plan

Our approach to Strategy Development capitalises on OTT Consulting’s strengths.  It is not a report based approach, typical of some competitors, which can so often leave a client with a strategic plan which is neither owned nor achievable.  Our approach satisfies the current call for strategic development which takes full account of passion and emotion, new voices, new forms of conversation, new perspectives and the application of imagination.  At the same time, the analysis and development phases of the work are robust.  The strategy developed is issue led, fact based, consistent, long-term and 'what happens'.  Our approach to Strategy Development is fully appropriate for organisations of all sizes in any sector, whether public or private, manufacturing or service.

The success of a Strategy Development project is very dependent on the full support, drive and commitment from the very top of the organisation.  It has to be bought by the most senior executive, with as much consensus as possible in the buying decision from the remaining members of the senior team.  The long-term benefits resulting from the implementation of the developed strategy are usually very significant, for example, two, three four or even five-fold sales growth, resulting in multi-fold growth in profits and shareholder value.
