Our approach to achieving high performance

High performance organisations get the most from every part of a business, and in particular from its people, by creating a valued, diverse and involved workforce.  At OTT Consulting we believe that any business can adopt the key characteristics of a high performance workplace to motivate staff and in turn raise productivity.  However, a remarkable few do, even when the positive results of doing so are available to see.  Successful high performing organisations share a number of key characteristics and a universal commitment to focus on both the customer and the employee and encourage best practice methods of working in human resources, work organisation and employee relations. The result?  Better skills, more committed and engaged employees, and a diverse and equal working environment. Because of these elements, such workplaces achieve higher levels of performance, profitability, shareholder value, customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Our starting point therefore is often the development and implementation of a business-led ‘people' or 'human resource management' strategy that meets the needs of our client’s business now and in the future.  Our work then often involves the re-design and re-development of the existing organisation in order to meet the requirements of the human resource management strategy.  This may mean an examination of the 'people processes' and 'existing and required culture' to provide a routemap towards high performance.  Our experience informs us that organisational commitment to people must be consistent across a number of variables depending on whether it wants to be command and control or highly flexible.  In practice this means that we need to focus on five interrelated areas or main characteristics underpinning the human resource management strategy:

  • A focus on HR/people issues including fair and open recruitment, effective management and well established disciplinary and grievance procedures.

  • A focus on employee involvement encouraging team-working, devolved responsibilities, trust, communication and involvement.

  • A commitment to equality and a diverse workforce promoting equal opportunities and drawing a workforce from all corners of the community.

  • A variety of working patterns including flexible working, work-life balance and family friendly policies, and organising work to match demand.

  • An investment in training and development ensuring a highly skilled and adaptable workforce.

In addition, and uniquely, OTT Consulting will also work with you to explore your commitment towards both your customers and your employees.  We will encourage you to explore the extent to which your employees are constantly thinking about your customers, and in turn the extent to which the leaders of your business are thinking about your employees.

Thinking about the customer:  The principle vehicle for developing meaningful, long-term and profitable relationships with customers is the development of winning ‘Customer Value Propositions’.  The challenge is to apply the Customer Value Proposition so that they drive winning delivery in your marketplace, and also maximise profitability for the business.

Thinking about the employee:  The principle vehicle for attracting, retaining and developing meaningful employee relationships is the development of a culture that recognises that the collective and individual employee knowledge and capability are the keys to success, and which is attractive to prospective employees and current team members alike.  The challenge is to develop a winning brand that will attract and retain talent so that they can drive the high performance winning culture, and also maximise profitability for the business.

In this way both the customer and the employee are at the heart of a focused business plan and delivery system where the brand embodies their shared values, beliefs and behaviours.  The potential for high performance exists if you have a solid customer base and an employee base that values the leadership, management and other team members alike.  However there is no single, simple formula for achieving high performance status.
